5 MISTAKES YOU'RE MAKING WHEN
INTRODUCING CATS AND DOGS
Did you know there’s a right and a wrong way to introduce cats? If you didn’t, chances are you’re doing it wrong! Never fear; a little whoopsie here and there never hurt anyone.
However, knowing how to introduce your cat to dog properly will make your life a lot easier and your pets' too. So, do you recognize any of these common pet owner mistakes?
1. Failing to Make a Game Plan
The biggest mistake we see being repeated over and over is when fur-parents don’t plan for their new furmily member. Bringing home a new pet can be a massive change for the whole furmily as well as the new furball you’re bringing home. It’s always best to be prepared!
2. Rushing the Introductions
Did you know it takes up to 8 and 12 months for cats to develop relationships with their new fursibling? Then we wonder why we’re having issues after only 2 days without proper introductions.
3. Underestimating Your Pet’s Personality
A friendly doggo is cute for us hoomans. For your new cat? Not so much. Although your pooch may mean well, your cat can get overwhelmed. The same goes for your cat, they can be more highly strung than you thought!
4. Throwing in the Towel to Quickly
When things get ruff, you may want to throw in the towel and hope for the best. We paw-mise; perseverance is key! The longer you dedicate to introducing cats, the smoother the fur-endship will be.
5. Forgetting to Create Separate Spaces
During this introduction period, both your cat and dog will be on edge. Your dog will most likely want to sniff and paw around your cat’s space. Your cat, on the other hand, will want to take its time to settle in. These two instincts can clash quickly without proper safety precautions!
So, how the meow do you introduce cats properly?
The secret to a successful introduction is giving your pets their space while encouraging supervised introductions. If you have a rambunctious doggo, are you thinking to yourself, “what? Isn’t this mutually exclusive?”
No! It’s possible to introduce your pets safely and while honoring their boundaries, it just comes down to a little secret weapon… Door Buddy.
When you’re bringing a new pet home, it’s impawtant to make sure that they feel safe and comfortable. Door Buddy products allow you to give your cat their space while keeping dogs out. This will come in handy as your cat starts to settle or if they get overwhelmed with the introductions.
You can also use Door Buddy for one of our fur-vorite introduction methods. Allow your cat and dog to sniff each other through the safety of our adjustable door strap. You can adjust the width to be wide enough that your cat and dog can get a good glimpse of each other while still keeping them at bay. Success!
We recommend slowly introducing your pets this way for a few days for the best results. You can then gently start bringing in mealtimes too. Your cat can eat its food on the one side of the door and your dog can enjoy their nibbles a safe distance away. This is a great way to build a long-lasting fur-endship!
Give your cat back their space with Door Buddy
Door Buddy's Adjustable Door Strap and Cat Door Prop were both designed to let cats into rooms easily while keeping dogs and babies out.
Not only does this give your cat back their privacy, but it also allows us furparents to enter and exit rooms easily too. No more fiddling with buttons or climbing over the gate, and no more destructive pet proofing solutions. Door Buddy installs in seconds and is simple to use!
It works purrrfectly if you’re keeping your litter box and cat food in a separate room in an effort to keep nosy unwanted visitors out. Kitty candy stealers beware!
At Door Buddy, we say safety doesn’t have to be difficult. Our products are simple yet affordable solutions to an otherwise expensive and difficult chore.
Are you even a pet owner if you hadn’t wished you pet proofed your home sooner?
Because we have. Countless times! Especially when you throw a crawling baby into the mix. We’re talking Kity Roca everywhere and cat food disasters every day. Poor Mr. Ralphy, he had no idea what was in store for him when we brought our sweet baby girl home.
So, why didn’t we pet-proof our home the moment we knew we were going to be expanding our furmily? Well, because of probably the exact same reason you haven’t - it’s hard and expensive!
Have you ever tried maneuvering through a baby gate at 2 am or with an arm full of laundry? Not fun. Then there’s the cat door. When you’re renting or simply have a love for your home, cutting a hole into the door just doesn’t seem like a viable option.
That’s the whole reason behind why we created our Door Buddy products.
We knew there had to be an easier way to give our cat his space while keeping our little explorer out!
Door Buddy is proudly made in the USA and has been designed by furparents. So, when we say we know how you feel, we really know how you feel!
Our store includes our Adjustable Door Strap that attaches with strong 3M adhesive. It is simple and versatile to work with a range of different door types. Our Door Strap Combo Set includes a foam door stopper for added safety. This keeps tails and fingers safe and prevents your cat from getting locked in or out of the room. A must for worried parents!
Our newest product, the Door Prop has been a fan favorite since its launch in 2023. It is a sturdy solution for standard swinging doors to keep it securely propped. It is convenient to use, simply turn the knob or handle to enter the room and pull the door closed and back into the propped position.
With Door Buddy, giving your cat a safe space has never been simpler!
